This came out, don't think I've ever polished a piece this much in one sitting, the power of mecha got me though
A Marauder heavy mech from battletech, firing a pair of PPCs and Medium Lasers.
Due to the original being a pull from macross, the canon design has gone through a lot of changes in it's life. With my painting I aimed to bring together the feel of the original, with some modernization of the re-seen version, some IIC details made it in too.
Biggest thing, and it might simply be the pòse and perspective, it's the most agile and menacing looking version. The lore descriptions implied a leanness that added to it's aggressive and alien look. The canopy on this, especially from this angle help lend it that air.
Also appreciated are the visible and thus vulnerable torso rotation ring and base on the Autocannon. To me the weapon pods look more in scale to what I ension of a Marauder.
The pose is probably the number one aspect that gives it that dynamic feel to me, as well as the weapons fire. If there were a knock on that aspect, there is something from the position or possible just the shape of the autocannon barrel that feels off, for lack of a more precise term, feels a little melty. Maybe just a slight physical separation, being a skosh higher on above the hull, would change that.
Line work I enjoy a lot aside from that minor criticism, and while it lacks some of the technical details of some pieces, I would say that being too technical would actual bog down the energy of the piece, as something in motion is rarely seen with extreme clarity, anyhow. That goes for the more organic, less machine precise nature of the line work itself. All of it just adds to the dynamism of the piece in general.
Colors are good, and the choice if toxic greens for the atmosphere makes the Wolfs Dragoons color scheme jump out, as well as just a nice contrast and alien planet feel to the background in general. Love that the mech's paintjob itself is largely simple and uncluttered, the antithesis to the repaints often seen (and I am often guilty of!) in the MWO Forums. Again, it adds to the feel of motion.
In all, I would say, great lines, color usage and a ton of energy to the piece giving it a animalistic fluidity. Minor knock on the AC, but not enough to detract from the piece as a whole.
Or in laymans terms, I love it!
The top mounted gun, the vents on the side and the extruding bubble cockpit. All great choices. I felt the technique was a little lacking, not that it's not fantastic it's just it doesn't feel like it's up to your usual standards.
If you ever get around to designing a 3D model or even a few more illustrations of this concept from different angles I would definitely go hit MWO over the head with the design. Give Alex a run for his money.
Peace out sir
Marauder is my Mech of choice.
Great job as always Mr. Scroggins
My frigin childhood!
I loved Mech Warrior 4 Vengence to death! It'd be great to see Microsoft remake these games.
So a couple of salvage runs and skirmishes later I had my finished MAD-5D modified, "Mad Raptor." Dropped the AC/5 and ammo for Jump Jets (5/8/5 Heavy Mech!), and got a full conversion to Clan Heatsinks. I may or may not have found some Clan PPC's to swap out, don't quite remember. I also added some armor to some key spots but that's the basic jist of it.
but it makes me feel old playing the old school Mech Warriors 2 as a Merc'
And then playing with the action figures
Oh well; I'm sure something else equally awesome will turn up, and I won't stop loving this one.
I do love the reseen, but it looks nothing like the original and the fluff does nothing for the older models. THis captures the spirit of it though.
