Mech Warrior - Dire Wolf by Shimmering-Sword Mech Warrior - Dire Wolf by Shimmering-Sword
Been slowly churning this out between Contact work, another battlemech commissioned by ~StridersStrikersTeam

A mercenary Dire Wolf / Daishi Assault Mech. It carries a Gauss Rifle, 3 Large Pulse Lasers, 2 Streak SRM6 Launchers, and an anti missile system.

I tried to create a gauss firing effect without using that silly helix effect, not a lot of reference out there other than fireballs from launch friction :D

Theres always a visual distortion in the background caused by air density and thermal effects like you see with camp fires and jet exhaust. Since railguns heat the air up through said launch friction, why not give it a shot sometime? :) [link]

Very nice.. I like the striped paintjob.
Even if I can't wrap my head around mercs using an assault Clan mech.
I've played Merc in my time and repair and maintenance was always a pain in the ... backside.
I don't even won't to think about the costs to keep this big daddy up and running.

A few notes on perspective errors I noticed:
-The right leg is too skinny overall, and the shin guard's patterning makes it look like it's facing towards the camera (not angled properly). The foot also appears to be placed too far to the right (from the viewer's perspective).
-The left arm's black torso-connector joint is visible, when it probably wouldn't be given the torso's rotation. Perhaps like the other arm, the

I really like the upper torso overall, though (in particular the AMS and its placement), and the joint designs on the legs are pretty sensical overall.
Going through your gallery shows a significant improvement over time. Keep up the good work!

Using 3D helps fix all those minor perspective issues.
I like to think I can freehand everything better than many official BT artists though :D

Haha. Well, it certainly is less severe than, say, the Atlas's jimmy-leg in the original art. [link]

Well it is a clan mech, every mech in battletech has multiple loadouts, then there are full custom loadouts that anyone can make.

There are few mechs that can create the cold chill up your spine like the lumber of a Daishi... Atlas comes close just from the look, but a Daishi will put more holes in you than a cheese grater in the time it takes to piss yourself.

very well done on the gauss effect. I do agree wholeheartedly that the helix pattern is silly and that what you did here is actually more accurate of the physics of it. Faving this like many of your other works but overall very well done. in terms of critic, i admit i am by no means an artist or anything. the only thing i can even remotely mention is that source lighting on the 3 large lasers seems to be angled differently from that of the rest of the body. The three white dots specifically make it seem like the lighting is coming from above the mechs shoulder, where the rest of the lighting seems to be coming from its side. But again that may just be me seeing things. *chuckles.*

Regardless, very fine work. I'm back to looking through your gallery. =)

Thanks for the compliments. The lighting is kind of washy on this one, I have a white source from the right and an orange source from the left :D

Nice.

Sort of like how the mad cat MK 2 is also known as the Timber Wolf. :p

or a slightly Lighter firepower Atlas is Known as Prometheus. Many Different names for similar Mechs. Like the Mad dog and the Vulture for instance. same chassis, same weight, Just different fire power

Actually the different names don't mean a weapon change either, that's just a gimmick MechAssault used. The idea is that the Clans gave their mechs names (often the less commonly known name) then when they invaded the Inner Sphere the IS needed names for them. So for example a Timber Wolf was named Mad cat by the IS (a MkII is still a MkII), Dire Wolf was named Daishi, Adder name Puma, Mad Dog a Vulture. Almost every Clan mech has 2 names for this reason.

Really awesome picture of the Daishi. The mech in which I eventually piloted towards the end of every career I played(because I sucked at making a few other mechs to work, in MW4).

You were trying something new with the gauss, and I like that you weren't sticking to the helix effect. Perhaps you've already seen this since it's old news, but if not, you have a real-world railgun to reference from:
[link]

At this stage, the friction is so great, as you can see from the video. Although it is "future tech" being used over here, I reckon you can hardly show any real effects from gauss weaponry at it's most ideal since it's not gunpowder based(and magnetic fields aren't observable with colour unless I'm wrong).

BUT I believe you had a good idea of how it would look. Assuming it reached faster than the speed of sound the instant it left, there can be a sonic boom represented like what you did here(like for aircraft surpassing the speed of sound). The friction shown here is nice, though I don't really know if it's possible for gauss weapons firing to reach this stage of minimal friction.

Yah, I definitely took a look at existing rail/coilgun technology, but tossing a flaming piece of metal and having everything burning from friction doesn't look much like the railgun we've come to love from scifi, so this was the compromise :D

I sometimes wonder why the established railgun fire we all come to love is blue in colour lol

Hi, since you are requesting opinions on this work I'll try to give you my impression: For a start this work is a huge improvement over your past works. The shapes are better defined, the surface textures are more variable and I can feel the metal on the mech which is very important. The shading is also very good and the cockpit glass is amazing - truly feels transparent. What you can improve on is the mech's stance (it looks a bit awkward, must be the right leg's position which looks a bit unnatural). Also, the "axis's" of the shoulders are not aligned which also looks a bit false. The last point that I feel could be improved upon is the Gauss effect. I like the rings around the muzzle a lot but I'd like the smoke trail to be as straight as possible -with minimal "fluctuations" so as to give the impression of the ultra-speed of the projectile. As it is it looks rather like something in-between a normal projectile and a very fast missile.
