Flags and Guns by Shimmering-Sword Flags and Guns by Shimmering-Sword
Another livestream semi-speed paint. Tried out the flagship again, not perfect yet, I'll have to 3D model it to get it right. Should I spend another sitting on this to get a fleet in there?

The command flagship for the Protectorate fleet.
-It's dual hull design aids in redundancy should it ever be found in heavy fighting. The lower hull is largely filled out by a massive staging hangar for defensive ships and a sizable ground force.
The upper hull houses the majority of the crew, who's accommodations are considered lavish for a space vessel, this for the large number of officers often on board.
-The ship is also equipped with extensive processing and maintenance facilities, it can support it's crew and provide extensive repair capabilities for local forces when planet based facilities are not available.
-4 main rail guns along it's 2 noses are it's main anti warship armament. These can fire a variety of munitions, guided or not, at firing rates up to high enough that more than one round can be moving down a rail at once, if needed.
-Warships all carry a common tech shielding that disperses energy weapons, this is why most ships use projectile weapons. Should an enemy ships shielding be disrupted, this flagship contains a laser generation system. 2 focusing turrets, one top and bottom, can fire on vulnerable ships to quickly destroy them.
-12 massive turrets each with 2 guns play a pivotal role in laying down spread fire on distant or closing ships, this ensures a much higher hit probability against evasion maneuvering.
-Numerous point defenses guard against small ships and fighters, some medium sized defense weapons can also join in the spread fire patterns against targets.
-Due to it's massive size, it is unable to make effective evasive maneuvers against enemy fire except in very long range engagement from glancing shots. Thanks to the Elemental program however, along with basic energy weapon shielding, this ship also uses forcive shields to deflect projectile weapons when possible. It's onboard ground forces will often include a number of Elementals which can join in on defensive actions.
-For all it's abilities as a warship, such a large investment in a single ship would lead it to be a prime target in war, so it largely spends it's time in friendly territory making use of it's command and combat staging power.

I don't think I was. I'd tried out double hull designs before watching BSG. I like sleek forms, so as I develop this ship the resemblance is a bit unavoidable.

Nice!! I like the dual-hull design. What is the purpose of the wing-lik structures? I'd guess they house heat radiators, though they look a bit thick for that- maybe they're just for decoration? I presume that the superstructure at the "top" of the upper hull houses the bridge. I'd suggest locating the main command center to the very core of the ship, where it would have some more protection. I can imagine the crew having difficulty aligning the four main spinal mount rail-guns with a target- a flagship this large will be sluggish turning. Moment-of-inertia and all that. Thus the twelve heavy rail-gun turrets. Maybe you should fit a few more to protect the rear of the ship. Does she ever use ship-to-ship missiles or torpedoes? Kinetic slugs are deadly, but if you didn't aim right they will miss, while a torpedo can correct its course until it hits the target- unless it is shot by point defense weapons, that is. :)

Wings as far as my artistic reasoning is just for looks, but almost anything can be justified as a technology.
Main gun alignment and missiles come together into one answer. The railguns will fire guided munitions, essentially massive mostly kinetic impact missiles. This way the extreme length of the ships guns can give it a high starting speed, then as it closes it will get even faster and also correct it's course. While this very high speed will make for devastating hits, the missiles also can't redirect as fast as reasonably sized ships evasive thrusters if the evasion computer is doing it's job. Guided main weapons are a huge step up from unguided though.
Getting the kill comes down to an evasion mistake, or spread volley fire. The flagship can fire it's 4 main guns at the same time and have the missiles assume a square spread, increasing the window that the enemy ship must escape. I'm probably very newbie when it comes to space combat tactics, but I'm thinking of some things :D

Sometimes, physics plays right into the hands of artistic reasoning. Being in space is a bit like being in a giant thermos bottle- there is no way to get rid of waste heat without radiating it, or dumping expendable coolant (which will run out sooner or later). Power plants, some propulsion systems, and lasers all need to be cooled to avoid system meltdown. This means even spaceships that never land on planets often require graceful heat radiator "fins", which are always a nice thing to draw.

In real life, kinetic projectiles that have some measure of on-board terminal guidance have been called "smart rocks". :) The square spread idea makes sense. If you can box in your target, so that thrusting away from one projectile put him in the path of a another, he's a dead duck. By "rail gun", do you mean "coil gun" or "mass driver"? Rail gun has become a generic term for any sort of gun that launches projectiles with electromagnetic fields, but actual rail guns are limited by rail erosion. As I said, the term as become somewhat generic, so most people just think of any sort of electromagnetic cannon as a "rail gun"...

I'm a beginner at space combat tactics and at drawing, but I'm practicing and thinking... :D I found interesting info on spacecraft and space war here: [link] [link] [link] Atomic Rockets is pretty good, but I don't agree with absolutely everything that appears on these kind of "hard SF" sites and some things may be misleading or outright incorrect. It's best to be careful and do your own research...

I have to say, looking more and more at this vessel... the wing like structures bother me immensely. Because of the way the Secondary Battery is set up, the they create too much of a blindspot for heavy gun fire to the rear of the vessel. I would personally suggest adding or moving a set of turrets of the Secondary Battery to the aft of those structures if you do not wish to remove those structures entirely.

Another possibility is setting up a set of turrets on the wing like structure themselves to effectively remove the rear blindspot so that any vessel trying to get into any sort of blind spot that large, sleek warships typically have would have to pretty much be sitting inside the engines themselves before they are out of the line of fire.

Yeah I'd probably add some larger turrets to the back, not as large as the secondaries though. Anything that can get close enough wont be too large. If it is a big ship then it probably can't react fast enough to the flagship rolling to shift it's blind spots. This all ignoring the escort fleet that should have it covered .

There are strategems that are oft neglected by cinematic media but are extensively explored in literary mediums in regards to space combat that take advantage of the infinite size of space and the prospect of showing up from any direction. The highest profile emulation of this idea (Though ultimately flawed in execution due to plot considerations) was the Battle over Endor where an Imperial Fleet took advantage of knowing the objective of the Rebel Alliance and managed to get an entire fleet of Imperial Star Destroyers + 1 Super Star Destroyer to drop out of hyperspace behind the Rebel Fleet's capital ships and screening escort vessels. Unfortunately this massive advantage was thrown away because the Emperor wanted to make a show of the Rebel's destruction. In various EU and Lucas directed projects, some major engagements included maneuvers in which a mid-sized or even a capital ship would drop out of hyperspace right in the midst of an enemy formation at a favorable angle of attack with the stated goal of hitting the enemy hard from where retaliation would be most hindered at being directed towards, so as to disrupt the formation as they maneuver to better handle the significant new threat.

I always enjoyed watching the 'Gundam Chronicles' I believe it was called, never got tired of seeing all the new character/mech and ship concepts/artwork in new episodes.
Love your work btw! awesome stuff!
I'm still looking through the rest of your gallery, don't want to miss a thing.
If you have any concepts, sketches or even some basic 3d models you've donated to DA for public use - or you'd like to have some used in a non-commercial game mod - I'd be glad to include some in one of mine for Unreal Tournament 2004!
