Contact - Ocean Strip Mine by Shimmering-Sword Contact - Ocean Strip Mine by Shimmering-Sword
In the future when land based resources have been largely exploited, mining companies turn their eyes to the depths and begin to mine valuable ores under water. Giant drilling and excavation vehicles cut into the ocean floor, manned by workers in powered atmospheric diving suits.

These banners I'll be posting aren't the tightest on details as they're made to print as headers on A4 paper. Some have cool settings though, so here they are.

But you could and can see details.  Remember underwater things are a little fuzzy.  And this picture is excellent.!!!!

As with most of the Terrors of the Deep pieces, the colors and atmosphere are FANTASTIC. Makes me want some visual media set in a environment like this.

Ah, deep-sea mining, cool. :) There actually are quite a bit of resources on the ocean floor... more than on land, given the greater surface area of the oceans on our planet and the volcanic rock that makes up the seafloor.  The only problem is operating in the crushing pressure and darkness of the deeps.  And of course aquatic aliens, giant sea monsters, Captain Nemo, you know, the usual. :XD:

I have no idea on it's origin, it's a company logo that I was given to use.

They're heavy and move along the ground. A floating sub doesn't have very good leverage for mining.

The fish add some needed variance in color, as well as more objects in what would otherwise be a spartan image. My first thought, however, is that the noise/vibrations caused by such equipment would scare most animals away. So, from a composition standpoint, I like the fish; from a realism standpoint, I'm like, "What are those doing there?"

Careful you don't want to drill into the core. Somehow I think that would happen either by accident or just not caring how far they go.

Haha, Not that you can really get there, it's too hot, but it'd be no worse than causing a volcano.

It's not just the heat, it's also the pressure of everything else collapsing in on you, like in the movie, "The Core".

Drill through 6 to 12 miles of oceanic crust, then thousands of miles of molten mantle?
Not at all likely, even by accident.

If I can give ideas, I'd paint some more bubbles... and maybe some undersea flora...
for me it was kinda hard to know that the scene was underwater until I saw the fishes ;P

I'm not sure if I had a reason for no bubbles on this one. The suits would be using rebreathers but the could still be some. It was one of the early banners I did for the book though, I probably just didn't think of it.

The sea! Mankind's last great terrestrial frontier! That will never get explored because it's more trouble than going to Mars. ;p

you can test water missions all day at the beach, not so easy with space. Currently there isn't much reason to go down or up though.

Easier to test, maybe, but that's only confirmed that there's as many, if not more issues with human adaptability to the deeps than there is with space.

The atmosphere here is stellar and alien, hell, I thought this was Europa at first. :D

On a much sillier note, the pose of the man in the foreground screams of regret at eating so many burritos.
