Contact - End Game by Shimmering-Sword Contact - End Game by Shimmering-Sword
One of my favorite pieces from the Contact book, maybe because I came up with the idea for this one, or at least part of it.

Showing off some of the high tech gear you can put on the field in Contact. Power armor with anti-gravity packs, plasma rifles, and particle cannons. All while jumping from your supersized vtol, explosions to your back :D

Ffff, I sort of wish I wasn't so crushingly poor, so I could commission yoo to draw my Xeniths. I keep changing the armor shape and placement because I'm never happy with ANYTHING. XP

Pew-Pew!! Is the largish gun firing greenish bolts a plasma rifle or particle cannon? Anyway, good work.

Does anyone know which story was the first to use plasma based weapons? Plasma guns have become a very popular idea in SF, showing up everywhere from Terminator to Star Trek, in various video games and RPGs, in Babylon 5, and a host of other works, but it is not clear who first invented the concept. The earliest depiction of a "plasma weapon" I know of is the plasma blob torpedo the invisible Romulan spaceship uses in the Star Trek TOS episode "Balance of Terror". The next place plasma weapons crop up in is the movie Terminator as the "phase plasma pulse rifles" used by both human resistance fighters and Terminators in the far distant future of 2019. From there on, we find plasma weapons everywhere. This is all despite the fact that a plasma bolt/blob would tend to bloom and dissipate within centimeters of the gun muzzle unless the bolt was magically confined or fired at hypersonic speeds, and even then we have problems. So why do people use them? Because they make pretty colors...

I'm pretty sure others would have concepted the plasma weapon idea long before these shows, either in very old scifi literature or even scientists themselves. Who came first doesn't really matter, as one of many improbable scifi weapons it's a common type that no one needs to stake a claim to.
Most realistic depictions of plasma weapons do have a beam or shot traveling at near light speeds in order to offset such dissipation, the idea of "slow" moving weapons fire in general is purely a visual aesthetic used for convenience in shows/film and games, never truly justified.

I'm sure someone came up with the idea of the plasma weapon long before those shows, I just would like to know who. I know that H.G. Wells imagined heat-rays in War of the Worlds, inspiring a whole generation of SF writers to invent fantastic death rays and blasters well before the invention of masers and lasers. I've heard of early books that depicted powered armor soldiers and such long before modern games and movies. In some cases weapons were imagined by scientists and then used by SF, like neutral particle beam weapons for space warfare.

You are right that plasma weapons are so common and so varied in their depiction that no one can really claim to own them. Personally, I would depict plasma weapons firing bolts at hypersonic speed using the ionized particles' own velocity, a bit like how VASIMR directs a plasma stream aft by allowing the plasma to expand through a magnetic nozzle, instead of showing "plasma balls" being fired at slow speed.

Wow, that looks pretty cool.

But besides they remind me of Fallout's Enclave they also look alot like Cerberus troopers from Mass Effect 3 [link]

I don't see a single similarity to a Cerberus soldier, what is it?

Well, in my opinion it's mostly the shape of their armor and helmets and also slightly the color scheme that reminds me of them.

I looked over all the cerberus trooper classes I could find and can't see any individual piece or overall proportions that match, nor do they share color schemes. You may want to compare things yourself a bit more before you say this sort of stuff publicly. I'm not bothered by it too much myself because I know this is a common problem, but it can be quite offensive to artists when you make baseless comparisons, it kind of discredits the artists originality.
The Fallout comparison isn't so bad, because there you're at least comparing the same type of soldier armor, but it's still a pretty weak comparison. Comment smarter :)
