Commission - Main Battle Tank by Shimmering-Sword Commission - Main Battle Tank by Shimmering-Sword
My 2nd commission done for :icongaiden1992: ~Gaiden1992.

This is the Basilisk. With a chassis slightly heavier than modern main battle tanks, it's main gun is a conventional 155mm smooth bore, but also mounts a magnetic rail accelerator at the muzzle for extra power. A coaxial and loaders machine gun along with a remote minigun turret operated by the commander offer point defense. Various smoke, intercept, and anti-personnel launchers around the vehicle offer strong countermeasures.

I really like this. Too many science fiction tanks tend to look interesting but would be crap in combat. This on the other hand manages to meld futuristic elements with a dash of realism.

Some suggestions for you:
1 a coilgun offers lower maintenance to a mechanical railgun
2 a pair of miniature turrets using .30caliber-20mm autocannons mounted on the sides of the main turret would offer frontal, side, above, and rear fire arcs.

I would rather have a higher velocity, lower caliber weapon which would offer higher penetration, accuracy, range and capacity ammunition.
Small defense guns with multiple arcs of fire would be important to guard from all angles, including aircraft, even missile weapons.

I liked that idea from the client, as I do the same thing on some of my own designs.

It is a somewhat standard type of drawing for me, but most of the time I'm commissioned to do paintings, so I don't do a lot of sketch stuff.

Electromotive guns, the next best thing since pewpewlaz0rz.

I see that many sci-fi writers out there like holding similar realistic grounds on armor: rails, gatlings, antimissiles. Well, hey, I'm guilty myself. XD

I hope that ~Gaiden1992 won't misunderstand, though: regardless, this machine looks sweeter than honey.

That's a bigass gun! Abrams only has a 120mm smoothbore. Our howitzers are 155mm. Excellent visual design.

Very plausable, very feesable.

This is coming, the magnetic accelorator in the barrel is not stupid, and the remote turret is now becoming a possibility.

Take it a rifled bore would be more expensive.

This is VERY good - conventional, understandable yet futuristic.

Bravo!

I don't think you would want to rifle something that uses magnetic acceleration, not to mention most modern rounds working better in a smooth bore. But yea, a pretty practical tank.

"most modern rounds working better in a smooth bore"

Explains why UK tanks seldom fire anything.

Cheers for the heads up!

hahaha yea, if the UK was to go into tank vs tank warfare they would probably refit with smooth bores quickly. But knowing the odds of that is rare they are probably just saving some money.

If i'm right is saying this, then this is really damn awesome. Seeing as it has a magnetic rail accelerator would that mean that t hits it's target almost instantly like a rail gun? Also creating mass destruction??
DESTRUCTION!!!!

It's only a small booster rail, so a faster shell, but I dunno if it's as fast as a full railgun. Still makes things go boom.

But... no independant Commander's sight? Or does it rely on distributed sensors for that?
