Commission - Galkgrokst Infantry by Shimmering-Sword Commission - Galkgrokst Infantry by Shimmering-Sword
This was a fun commission to work on. The initial description sounded run of the mill alien soldier, but turns out this one had previously been worked on by *Abiogenisis (awesome artist) and it was my job to give it some gear. (clarification, this was not commissioned by Abiogenisis or collaborated on, we just had the same client)

The Galkgrokst is an intelligent species. It moves along the ground much like a snake, only using it's spindly arms to help heave itself over obstacles or make tight turns at speed. It's 6 mouth parts are what it uses to interact with objects, each being quite dexterous and having roughly the strength of a human arm.
As a soldier it wears a set of modular wrappings. It's underside features segmented flexible plates that are slick to allow movement but are also serrated to prevent back sliding. Hard ballistic plates are used to protect vital organs where practical, while the majority of the outfit uses soft body armor. Webbing straps allow various gear to be fixed along it's body, currently featuring drum magazines (sorry, empty mags) and general equipment bags. It's also wearing an NBC breather over it's breathing holes (behind it's eyes), while headphones/ear protection and a microphone system strapped to it's mouth allow for squad communication.
Square pattern camo, because your enemies never expect an ambush from a picnic blanket.

Really, really great. I know Abiogenesis gallery and his artworks and commentaries about the concept behind his pictures are brilliant.

Not only is this awesome because of technical skill, but it awesome because of the atypical nature of the designs and the ultra-atypical nature of the creature they are designed for.

You should draw some weapons for him.I'd love to see the differences in design and mechanics between Galkgrokst weaponry and Human weaponry.

There are six tentacles at the front of their heads, and they use these to manipulate their environment and use tools.

Hey there! Creator of the galkgrokst here. First of all, my thanks to Shimmering Sword for his excellent work on this project. He's a professional and a gentleman, and I highly recommend him for any projects you may have in mind.

I never expected these little guys to generate as much interest as they have! I'm starting my own account here and will be happy to answer as many of your questions as I can.

About 1.6 meters, or 5'6", discounting the horns. Much longer, of course.

At this point I'm not sure many will see this comment. You definitely pull some publicity when you have popular DA artists doing work for you :)

Apparently so! It wasn't my goal or intention, but heck, if people are curious, maybe I can help out a little. Thanks again for your excellent work--you are justly popular--and I look forward to doing more with you in the future.

And for this reason Picnics are usually carefully monitored by intelligence operatives in areas bordering the Galkgroks.

I like the design, and the work on it's gear...

My little galkgrokst, my little Galkgrokst.
The military companies can make these better than
human clones at a lower cost.

Wars can be fought with bioengineered creatures, thats one of the
Future's better features.
No more loss of human life, no more weeping of a recently widowed wife.

Let the creatures fight for glory while humans watch, thats the story.
Things start to change when the Galkgrokst refuse to fight in the battles that humans arrange.

Only a few Galkgrokst see human as friend while others are
embroiled in a war that does not end.

War is a waste of sentient life,
those that ignore this are cursed with endless strife.

Looks great.

I'm fairly certain that these creatures were not engineered. Looking at some lower comments, it seems they are aliens, not humanity's weaponry.

That is one wicked combat alien!! Good job! :D
I can't tell though, are the red oval globes on the sides of it's head eyes, or some sort of device in it's ears?

Ha ha, cool alien soldier, I am left wondering what kind of weapon does this guy uses though... :) I guess he has to hold the gun with its mouth parts?  Very well thought out gear, gotta say this looks pretty practical as far as slithery snake-like aliens go.  Abiogensis is an awesome artist, I love seeing his art, I can see his mark on the creature- it is very neat seeing one with gear supplied by you, Shimmy!!

Interesting. Did the person who commissioned the Galkgrokst ever explain their role in combat? Because assuming it is member species of a conglomerate of some form. I'd assume they were adapt for recon and infiltration demo ops.

It's likely they're a sole sentient species on a planet, waring with themselves. Nothing in their description mentioned a limited role or cooperation with other races.

Humans wear body armor, entire face is exposed too. Protection is never absolute.

True enough, but when your eyes bug out to the sides of your body and are completely exposed, it'd still be a good idea to invest in some plexiglass monocles. I mean those are some major sensory organs to leave exposed.

It seems odd to me to wear NBC breathing gear while leaving your mouth and eyes exposed. O_o

Still, some neat ideas here. Certainly it's always interesting to see speculation on what aliens might actually have in the way of such things.

In one of it's bags it would have gear for covering the rest of itself, the breather at least covers it from non blistering and skin penetrating gasses.

That's amazing, but while looking at it a thousand of questions came to my mind, like: How does it grab a weapon that uses those magazines? how does it shoot it? who do they even manufacture all that armor? how do they wear it?
little hands inside those black spikes?
