Cannoneer WIP3 by Shimmering-Sword Cannoneer WIP3 by Shimmering-Sword
***
Sorry being a bit spammy updating so soon, really I shouldn't have shown that last shot.
Heres a view of the back, where you can see the massive magazines, some progress on cooling systems, and more lacking areas :D
I threw in the cannon rounds and a soldier to show the scale of things. Outrageous rounds eh XD I'll probably scale em down a little.
***

Heres something I've been working on (or had shelved) for many months. Now with my new computer fully completed I'm picking up a little 3D again.
This is going to take a long time to complete, so heres a preview.

Cannoneer - Juggernaut artillery mech.
Almost as massive as the SMR Behemoth, the Cannoneer mount massive artillery cannons that can fire a multitude of munitions. Designed in parallel to the SMR, intended to fulfill the same role of open ground control but at far less cost, allowing for less limited production.

x4 naval scale high velocity cannons
x4 high cycle heavy lasers
x2 9tube heavy missile launchers
- various point defense turrets
- large sensor array and spotter drones acquire targets

What's the reasoning? As a mech artist I'm likely to play mech games. They don't influence my art though (aside from me being a battletech artist).

How can those legs support all the weight?

Plus I think you overpowered this unit a bit.

Would be nice if I had time to keep messing around with 3D, but these days I only use it a little to aid my painting.

Yep it is very heavy and slow, wont deny I break the rules a bit for load bearing. I have designed the legs to have a straight through load system though, so while it's standing still it's less stressed.

I think this mech is going to struggle walking since its upper mass looks a lot heavier than what the legs can support. Maybe those 4 slots in the middle are jet engines to support the load.

Outstanding - thank you! I'm not all that great by any means, but I'm working on it. Between 2 jobs and college, it's not easy, but I have fun with it when I can - I use Wings 3D and Poser 6. Just beginning to learn Carrara, and hopefully Vue 8 soon, as well.
Thanks again!

I use Maya for modeling, just don't have the time to work with it a lot.
Go ahead and practice on it if you want, just give me some credit :)

What 3D program did you use to make this? It's incredible looking! I do some 3D art and modeling myself (see my gallery). This is awesome.... I'd like to try and re-create it in Wings 3D if you're OK with that.

Cool! Thanks for the advice! I figured I'd have to end up learning both of them somehow.. X]

I heard that Zbrush is the way to go for wacom users too (luckily I have one).

As always, I appreciate the time you spent helping me with my questions!

You do a lot of "face cutting" and "extruding" but you will have to learn some complex techniques to achieve certain precise results.

Your zsphere models look good, i always got frustrated using that base modeling process, and would make the basic shapes in maya instead. If you don't have a wacom tablet, zbrush isn't going to work too well. If you do, zbrush is the best program for character modeling, you can do nice low poly work in maya/max, but zbrush is the only way to make super detailed work. If you want to make your characters animated you need to master both though.

Thanks for the info! I've got ZBrush but suck at sculpting. I only get as far as z speheres and then I just call it quits. I'll try to get a demo of maya or 3DMax and try my hand at the points and egdes.

I don't know if I'm asking the right way, but from past experience the only thing I've ever done with 3Dmax was making shapes, and then beveling the sides to what I desired. Is that the same as the "points and edges" you were mentioning? Points and edges sounds a lot simpler than beveling geometry ^^;

Many things Maya and 3DMax are the same, at least concept wise, building objects via points and edges connecting them. Most 3D apps are that way. Zbrush is different in that it builds objects through sculpting with brushing, not by pulling around the points with a mouse.

Cool!

Do you know if it's similar to 3ds Max, or Gmax for that matter? I know it's nothing like Z-Brush.

Something else you could do is quad it. Would reduce the weight problem, and also be effective at stoping the kickback from toppling it.

After all, what if you want to fire all four cannon at once?

Yet another design that BT stole (somewhat) :D
It's a cool design, but I wont try "3rd times the charm", so not quads of top cannons from me :P

Or if you like advanced versions here are two versions of the MAC: [link] [link]

The funniest thing watching the series when we first see this big thing step forward and the deck buckles underneath the weight of it.

I can't add any color until all the modeling is done (a 3d workflow limitation). Some areas are close to done, but others are very incomplete.
I can pull this off, but it's way beyond my practical rate of progress. It's just like a newbie putting in massive time to make a great painting, do-able but not professionally practical.
