Battletech - Singapore by Shimmering-Sword Battletech - Singapore by Shimmering-Sword
My newest Battletech work for Catalyst Game Labs, an interior illustration for Liberation of Terra II.
Two Starslayers hunt down a Cestus in the city streets of Singapore as the Star Leagues 250th Battlemech Division pushes out the 19th Amaris Dragoons.

If I had more time for this assignment I would have liked to do a more extensive redesign on the mechs, especially the Cestus, but time was short. I chose mechs that deserved a bit of spotlight and while derpy could be easily fixed. Starslayers are pretty cool when you chop of their silly armpit thighs and balance their torso.

I have loved the Starslayer ever since MCII, and you do a good mech a great deal of justice in this picture!  Well done!

Starslayer is an awesome mech, I have two of those bad boys in my mercenary company. And I never realised the Cestus was a Starleague design.

They're pretty cool mechs when you remove some of the derp :D

When I was reading the book, I thought to myself: "I know the style!" Well done!...as always. The book is very interesting and worth a recommendation. Especially the topic about the European Theatre landings.
Keep it on! And I hope we are going to see more of your work in CGL books. :D

I am impressed with your black/white/shades of grey work. You did a fine job of tweaking the Starslayer, and the scene is one of action without being too busy. Furthermore, I have been to Singapore many times and those buildings are spot-on! Good work, Anthony.

The lack of busyness is in part due to my tight time schedule. If I had more time I would have liked to detail the city more.

Great choice! The Cestus surely deserved some more spotlight and the Starslayer too. Looking great, especially in some action.

Great work. I would love to someday see what your completed redesigns of the Cestus and Starslayer would turn out like. As is though, they are already much improved over the very lackluster originals.

Yeah, when I have the time and the go ahead I enjoy doing full redesigns. I can make a lot of improvement while maintaining the original feel.

This looks like an ordinary day in Singapore. Giant spiders, giant puppet girls, it was only a matter of time.

crap crap! I need to edit that. I was thinking Liverpool. You can't look up liverpool without a giant robot spider parading around. Words sound similar though.

Battletech books print mostly in BnW, on a high quality book there will only be a few color pages on the centerline. Then there's a color cover.

Woah, that looks fantastic.

... I'm curious though, is there some link between Singapore and mecha? I feel like I've seen a lot of games, shows and stories where there are mecha in that city. Maybe it's just me...

I think it came out well, overall. The only issue I can really think of is that... How can anyone tell it's Singapore? It just looks like a generic future metropolis. It's probably unrealistic to expect any currently standing landmarks to still be there in the late 2700s, but it would have been nice to see some kind of culturally significant indicators (say, a banner or billboard with Malay and Chinese text).

I would do things like that if I had the time, instead background detail took last place in my efforts. Requirements by Catalyst noted the city, but also said with it being hundreds of years in the future a likeness wasn't required.

I rather suspected that they didn't request anything too specific. But in Battletech lore many cultures and languages survive to the 32nd century. I just figured such a thing would be a nice extra. I did do an image search of Singapore to find something to use as an example that'd likely still be standing. I honestly didn't find much.

Shiny! Though MechCommander 2 taught me a certain dislike of the Starslayer, the lack of "armpit-thighs" do help a lot. Didn't mind the Cestus to begin with, but it's also a vast improvement.

Now for your next trick: A Maelstrom that doesn't look like it's about to fall on its ass? :D

I wish you could've had that time! The Cestus is an cool design, stats-wise, but it suffers from that ridiculous, overly-stylized look that they had going for TRO 3058. I swear it was like they were designing them out of soap bubbles and legos. O_o

Is this gonna be in the Liberation of Terra II historical?

They'd better print it: I have the first volume in print, and that's how I like my sourcebooks. Mainly because I can't drag my computer into... well, places where reading material is appreciated.

I mean, seriously, I like my deadtree editions, because they can't be wiped out by a computer virus. Or have DRM bullcrap placed in them so that the creators can lock it up any time they feel like it and force me to pay for it all over again just because I transferred to a new computer or something.

Digital stuff these days is filled all sorts of legalese bullcrap that's designed to screw over the consumer. I'll take the physical copies over that swamp of insanity any ol' day.
