Battletech - Seleucus Dropship by Shimmering-Sword Battletech - Seleucus Dropship by Shimmering-Sword
Here's another one of my favorites from working on TRO 3145 Marik. I've always wanted to get some dropship or larger scale designs of mine into the game, and it seems the response so far is this ship is something players would want to use.

The 2,600 ton Seleucus troop transport is an aerodyne dropship capable of carrying 20 squads of battle armor and 12 light or medium vehicles (often transport vehicles for the battle armor). It is armed with a blistering array of ER PPCs, Light Gauss, various Lasers, LRMs, and ample anti missile systems.

Seleucus, named after one of Alexander of Macedon's generals?

Ha ha, awesome dropship Shimmy!! :) As they say, what goes up must come down... hopefully not too fast. This is on the small end of things, though, aren't the big Battletech dropships those spherical ships?

It's forward firepower is about equal to an assault lance, so yeah.

What about flanks and rear?
Not to mention upper and under sides, itīs an aerosyne, so it fights 3-dimensional after all.

Spheroid dropships have weapons on all arcs, but unless an aerodyne uses turret equipment it's weapons only fire forward or backward.

Thatīs what iīm talking about. No turrets. Why?
Look at the old Leopard dropship design, it has a turret on top.
Would it be possible to incorporate it in your work too?
And if, where would you place it? With what equipment?
Aerodynes can be attacked from the flanks too, a little protection seems adequate to me.

Turrets in Aerotech rules are effectively moot, as all weapons are grouped in firing arcs, effectively a "fixed" 45-90 degree arc (though their never really stated as being as such). As such that turret on the Leopard as far as the game is concerned a largely fixed mount.

I tend to not worry too much about the rules myself, I just accept things are how they are. The majority of dropships in use are spheroids that don't suffer from blind spots, though they can't concentrate their firepower like an aerodyne can.

looks like it has large side hatches for embarking and disembarking, depending on the aerodynamics and situation, you could in theory be crazy enough to open them mid-flight and let the troops inside fire out...

Your lines are always so clean, are you building these in a rough 3d model first?

I used 3D on the mechs, but just for pose and perspective, no toon/line shader use in rendering. For these fliers I inked right over my first sketch. In photoshop I set the brush size I want and "shift click" the straight lines in. Then I freehand the smaller details.
Cutting/erasing in white space as detail is also critical. The lines are crevices, the whites are surfaces, so painting in white space is just as valuable as dark space.

Thank you so much for the reply.

I am writing a "Sci-Fi" RPG right now. And have done some vehicles in a similar fashion.

I block in the shell in 3D and draw in the details later. I do this because I am quite horrible with perspective. ;)

Pretty good work, the style is quite similar. There are small perspective errors on the ones I didn't use 3D on, but the end result looks almost the same. Using 3D in your process is definitely a legitimate workflow, provided you're not crutching on it with a sub par and noticeably 3D render finish. While yours do show the 3D origin, it's not a bad look, so you're doing it right.

Some thing tells me my GM in Battle tech is going to use this for our campaign. You see he saw it now. And he is love. What you expect he is a real life pilot. As for me I see this design in used for black operations drop. Or could be used like the Crusher Joe ship the Minerva.

Yes, he must love the total lack of proper aerodynamics :P
They seem to be great if you like to deploy a lot of BA (obviously), particularly in hot dropping the suits over the LZ to secure the area.

He started using the dropship.  We had to steal it.  What a weekend,  Pizza, Pepsi, coke, arguments and lots of fun.  Thanks for you're design.  PS  I am not leting my GM see any more Battletech pictures on my computer.  My character  ended up broken ribs, dislocated shoulder.
