Battletech - Draconis Combine Sunder by Shimmering-Sword Battletech - Draconis Combine Sunder by Shimmering-Sword
Here's a big piece that was commissioned by :iconmr-balk: ~mr-balk. It's been fun do do more than single mech paintings, and I have more coming up.

A Kuritan Sunder, 90 ton assault mech of the 10th Ghost Regiment is pushing into a position held by Blake 52nd Shadow Division infantry. This customized Sunder, nicknamed Samual, is loaded out with almost every anti infantry weapon in the book, terrifying even to these Blake cyborgs. A Malak light mech is rushing the Sunder in ambush but being in it's Dominus configuration is also carrying mostly anti infantry weapons, adding it's previously sustained damage it probably wont fair well.

Sunder Samual weapons:
1 Extended Range Particle Projector Cannon
6 Short Range Missile 4 Launchers (inferno ammo)
4 Flame Throwers
12 Machine Guns (in paired arrays)
2 A-Pods

Who's the idiot who is standing up when there's a giant murderous robot putting holes, electrocuting, or setting fire to everyone not behind cover

Not that it's the main figure of the painting but you did an amazing job on the Malak.

Only Wobbies would be dumb enough to engage a mech like that in open ground.

Infantry can actually be very helpful when ambushing Mechs. At least, on the ~tabletop setting I use...

Firing on an infantry squad is one thing, but engaging two 'mech targets at once with separate arms and with decent results?  THAT is the sign of a good battlemech pilot.

Mechwarrior never really captures the true capabilities of a battlemech, spreading fire isn't such a big deal.

I would be terrified to be an infantryman in the battletech universe--let alone fighting on the same battlefield that this 'mech is fighting on.  ><

And this is coming from a retired infantryman.

I don't always fight infantry with a battlemech- But when I do- I make sure that I vaporize at least one of them with a PPC for the ultimate overkill...

You thought right, and not only the legs.
But thatīs their main problem too, being designed on a frame thatīs too weak for the tonnage they finally sport.
Thus, early mdoells had catastrophic failures in the actuators.
Maybe the one pictured above is a later model with reworked legs. Or a complete frankenmech (parts of different mechs glued together), but i donīt think so.
Could be a custom made one for some VIP, a commander of some sort or noble.

24 srms = 48 damage, for 18 heat.  In City Fighting those 12 MG will kick in another 24 for 0 heat, and then you get 10 pts for the ER PPC (15 heat) and the Flamers could toss in 8 more (though for 12 heat, best saved for the PBI's).  82 damage for 33 heat?  Not too shabby.  It might not be ideal for open field combat, for for City Defense, the only thing it seems lacking is a BAP/ECM package and JJs.

Methinks thou dost protest too much!

Ideal for infighting and close-quarters to be sure (as a sunder should be) but I think it lacks significant burst damage potential.  Sure, the SRM's and the PPC pack a good punch, but is that reliable against an (hypothetical opponents) annihilator that might be packing four clan LBX-20 acs and two ER medium lasers?  Or an atlas that is rocking two ER medium lasers, two ER large lasers, an AC/2 and an AC/20 combo on it's hip in addition to a clan LRM 20 on it's right chest in addition to a full counter-electronics suite?  (i.e. ECM, IFF jammer, BAP, targeting computer, etc.)

so you are saying that a 90 ton mech should be designed to go toe to toe with 2 100 ton mechs, that also happen to be 10 and 30 kph slower than it?  Just because it's an Assault mech doesn't mean it has to match out to all other Assault Mechs.  Different roles.  For the type of fighting seen during the Jihad, down and dirty, city fighting, cyborgs, etc, this Mech is an ideal addition to any Heavy or Assault Lance, especially a Headquarters lance.

If you equip it correctly, a sunder can tear apart a niche mech such as the annihilator.  It's just a matter of equipment and effective range.  The Atlas, however, is a different story... it's more flexible then an annihilator, and has A LOT more armor, and electronic suite options so, you have a point.

But you also have to remember that the Jihad was not strictly on city based planets... in fact, I believe that is why the Black Heart and the Grim Reaper were developed so that the wobbies could have different 'mechs to fit different roles.

and the Sunder, as an Omni is designed to easily reconfigure to different roles.  This particular one was meant for anti personel and city fighting, the reason one uses an omni... loadout for the job at hand.  But keep insisting it has to have an Anti Atlas load all you want if ti makes you feel like a pro

lol for me, it's notsomuch about feeling like a pro as it is a matter of adapting to different situations.   That said, yeah.  This sunder would do great against infantry and most other mechs below it's weight class, but if the wobbies come rolling in with an assault omni-mech of their own that has a load-out that is designed to kill other mechs, I'd say that sunder is toast.

:iconbishopsteiner:

It might be.  The point trying to be made is different loadouts, for different roles.  This one was obviously prepped for that role.  Period.  Not sure where the disconnect is.  The pōint is, that as an omni, it's loadout IS adapted to the role it is being used in.  And unless it is running solo, it's lancemates are probably configured to fight the big guys.

The thing that kills me is that none are rear-mounted. It's going to mulch any infantry in 3 hexes of its front arc anyways, so why not fit two or so MGs behind it for more warcrimes?

Pretty sure the Apods are for that.  Not perfect if it encounters jump infantry, but pretty sure with that much lead and flame heading downrange, most things are going to be going the other way pretty fast anyhow.
